Seed coating is the process of applying an exogenous substance to the surface of the natural seed coat. This practice is commonly used to modify the physical properties of the seeds and/or to deliver active compounds. The physical modification of the seeds aims to improve the seed treatment by standardizing the seed weight and size. Delivery of seed active ingredients is done by delivering active compounds, such as plant growth regulators, micronutrients, and microbial inoculants, to protect seeds from plant pathogens and increase germination and plant growth. Seed coating is now used by the global horticulture and crop industries and has a presence in the worldwide market. Seed coating technology can potentially serve as a tool both to enhance plant building at a time when agricultural systems are facing challenges and to promote global restoration of degraded ecosystems.
