Lycium plants belong to the Solanaceae family of deciduous shrubs, with about 80 species worldwide, mainly in South America, and a few species in the temperate zones of Eurasia.
Many species of Lycium plants have medicinal value and are considered to be good pioneer plants for wind protection and sand fixation and land salinization because of their strong salt tolerance and biological drainage ability.
