Tissue Culture of Edible Apiaceae Plants

Tissue Culture of Edible Apiaceae Plants

The pink umbels of an Apiaceae plant

Apiaceae plants are one of the most diverse families of angiosperms, with about 200 genera and 2,500 species worldwide, mainly distributed in the northern temperate, subtropical, or tropical regions. The vast majority of Apiaceae plants are annual to perennial herbs, and there are more economic plants, which can be used as medicinal herbs, vegetables, spices, pesticides, etc.

The traditional method of obtaining Apiaceae plants is to dig wild plant resources, but due to blind excavation, not only do the wild resources are decreasing, but also seriously damage the ecological balance of nature. Artificial cultivation, in turn, faces problems such as quality degradation, pesticide contamination, and seeds with diseases. Moreover, the types and amounts of active ingredients of artificially grown Apiaceae plants often vary according to regions and climates, posing many difficulties for quality control.

Tissue culture service

The tissue culture system of Apiaceae plants established by Lifeasible has not only produced a large number of excellent asexual lines and obtained various metabolic substances needed for research, but also obtained haploids, triploid, and aneuploids in the breeding of new varieties of Apiaceae plants and the improvement of caste. Cells from tissue culture have also become ideal for analysis and research at the cellular level.

Some of the Apiaceae plants that we have successfully tissue cultured

  • Apium graveolens L.
  • Daucus carota subsp. sativus
  • Foeniculum vulgare Mill.
  • Anethum graveolens Linn.
  • Coriandrum satium L.
  • Cuminum cyminum
  • Oenanthe stolonifera
  • Pimpinella brachycarpa (Kom.) Nakai

Lifeasible uses plant tissue and cell culture technology to breed good seeds and fast breed seedlings of edible Apiaceae plants, realizing a low-cost annual supply of tissue culture seedlings, which can overcome the difficulties of seed retention, excessive seed use for division and propagation, and degradation of caste in some edible Apiaceae plants.

Applications

  • Fast breeding and detoxification production
  • Preservation of germplasm resources
  • Genetic improvement and breeding
  • Production of secondary metabolites
