Rhododendron Plant Tissue Culture

Rhododendron Plant Tissue Culture

We use tissue culture techniques to improve the
reproductive efficiency of this beautiful plant.

Rhododendron is the largest genus in the Rhododendraceae, and the plants of this genus occupy a relatively important position in botany. Since the discovery of Rhododendron plants, they have been cultivated in various ways, and more than 900 species have been formed worldwide and are widely distributed in Asia, North America, and Europe.

Rhododendron plants are often placed in gardens for people to enjoy because of their beautiful flowers and ornamental value. However, the flowering period is relatively long and the reproduction rate is slow, and the supply often exceeds the demand. Traditional methods usually use seed cuttings and grafting to propagate. These propagation methods are affected by the mother plant material and the propagation season, which are not suitable for large-scale commercial production and cannot meet the growing market needs.

In recent years, the development of plant tissue culture technology has promoted the propagation of Rhododendron plants. Lifeasible has adopted the plant tissue culture technology to promote the propagation of Rhododendron, making it independent of seasonal factors, which can improve the propagation rate of Rhododendron and promote the research and production application of Rhododendron plants.

  • Selection of explants

Rhododendron plant is a perennial woody plant with lush branches, covered with glandular hairs on its leaves, and its branches and leaves are sticky and easily stick to dirt, making it difficult to clean and disinfect the explants. In general, we use stem tips or stem segments from young branches in the tissue culture of Rhododendron plants. The young branches are not lignified and can be differentiated directly into buds during tissue culture.

  • Selection of culture medium

The basic medium provides the basic nutrition for the plant body, and if the medium is selected properly, the explants can grow more luxuriantly. The difference of the medium is mainly in the ratio of total salt content and nitrate nitrogen. We will choose the medium (basic medium, induction medium, enrichment medium, and rooting medium) according to the species of Rhododendron plants and the characteristics of the explants, and we will determine the appropriate ratio of the medium by experiment in the early stage.
