Nelumbo nucifera in the genus Nelumbo
We use tissue culture technology for rapid propagation of
superior asexual lines as a means to rapidly improve the
reproduction coefficient of Nelumbo plants and contribute
to their industrialization.
Nelumbo plants were collected and consumed in large quantities by humans in the early Neolithic period, and are very distinctive aquatic horticultural plants. Due to the wide distribution of Nelumbo plants and their long-term growth in different ecological environments, they show rich diversity in morphology, growth and development habits, and ecological adaptations to adapt to the local climatic environment, so the wild Nelumbo plant resources are rich in genes for excellent quality traits.
Nelumbo plant rhizomes, roots, or root strips are used as vegetables, fresh lotus seeds (fruits) are used as fruits, and flowers (lotus) are one of the famous flowers in the ornamental category.
In production practice, Nelumbo plants are generally propagated sexually by sowing seeds and asexually by dividing roots. However, Nelumbo nucifera, for example, is a heterogeneously pollinated plant, and the live seedlings are prone to mutation and half of them do not flower in the year of sowing, so sowing and propagation cannot be a means of industrial production.
Although asexual propagation using root division can maintain the good traits of the parents, the reproduction coefficient is low, the number of seeds required is large, time-consuming, and costly, and the multi-generation nutritional propagation can lead to the accumulation of virus diseases in the mother plant, which seriously affects the yield and quality of the product. Especially for some precious species and special varieties, the development is greatly restricted and has become a major obstacle limiting the development of the industry.
In addition, some Nelumbo plant species are very difficult to preserve the varieties due to their weak growth potential, which makes it difficult to provide a large number of excellent seedlings for commercial production and achieve commercial production. Therefore, the tissue culture system of Nelumbo plants established by Lifeasible is of great importance.
One of the ways of tissue culture of Nelumbo plants
We use buds and stem tips to directly induce adventitious buds or clumped seedlings, which is a more ideal way of in vitro fast propagation because the explants do not undergo dedifferentiation and redifferentiation and propagate neat progeny traits. However, we also have successful cases of in vitro culture with embryos as explants, so the specific method still needs to be determined according to the source, state, variety, and specific needs of the explants provided by the customer.
