The Ilex plant is the only genus in the family Aquifoliaceae with about 400 species. Ilex plant is a flowering plant with a height of about 2 to 25 m. Some are trees and some are shrubs.

Ilex plants mostly prefer warm and humid environments but are highly adaptable, so they are widely distributed in Asia, Europe, northern Africa, North, and South America, and are typical of subtropical zonal vegetation.

The leaves of Ilex plants are firm and glossy, and the berries are bright red and clustered on the branches. So, the ornamental trees of Ilex plants have high ornamental value because of their beautiful tree posture, peculiar leaf shape, beautiful flowers, and other garden morphological characteristics, in addition to the fruits. And now a variety of Ilex plants have become very common ornamental trees in the garden.

  • Tissue culture explants

  • Culture media and plant additives

For the tissue culture of woody plants, the selection of a suitable basic medium is of great importance for the induction of differentiation of explants and organ regeneration. Different basic media differ in the composition and content of essential nutrients. We mainly use three basic media, MS, B5, and WPM, in the tissue culture of Ilex plants.

Plant growth regulators play an important regulatory role in plant growth and development; therefore, the addition of different concentrations and ratios of plant growth regulators to plant culture media can lead to a wide variation in exosome induction and differentiation. The plant growth regulators we commonly use in Ilex plants are 6-BA, NAA, IBA, GA3, ABT, AC, etc.

  • Seedling transplanting
