Proserpinaca palustris 'Cuba' Mermaid weed

Proserpinaca palustris 'Cuba' Mermaid weed

Catalog Number
AP-0519
Common Name
Mermaid weed
Description
Proserpinaca palustris 'Cuba' is a very decorative variant of the Mermaid weed that was found on the Isla de Juventud (Cuba). North American plants of the species were already grown long time ago, while probably only the Cuban variant is available in trade nowadays. In its terrestrial (emersed) form, this stem plant has inconspicuous green leaves with serrated margins. Its pretty submerged foliage with orange to copper-red tones appears after planting into the aquarium. It has a moderate growth rate. Emersed Proserpinaca palustris somewhat resembles variants of Limnophila aromatica but differs by its alternate leaf arrangement from Limnophila species that have the leaves arranged in pairs (opposite) or whorls along the stem. The Mermaid weed from Cuba is moderately demanding. Medium to strong lighting, CO2 addition and a complete macro- and micronutrient supply are recommended. As well as other stem plants, it can be propagated by cuttings.
