Description
Greens' is a large, broad-leaved Java fern selection that is produced in water plant nurseries in the Netherlands. In its terrestrial form, its young, growing leaves have more or less reddish tips, similar to Microsorum pteropus 'Red'. However this reddish coloration hardly develops under water. The submerged foliage of Microsorum pteropus 'Greens' shows a light green tone, and the plant grows relatively fast.
The forms of the Java fern, Microsorum pteropus from tropical and subtropical Asia, are very adaptable and still grow with low light, however they look best with good nutrient and CO2 supply and medium lighting. Java fern is primarily an epiphyte that clings itself to hard materials such as wood and rock by its roots. It can also be fixed to the ground, provided that the rhizomes and roots are not buried, otherwise they may rot. This fern is easily propagated by rhizome cuttings and adventitious plantlets that appear on older leaves.
Microsorum pteropus 'Greens' is a versatile aquarium fern that attracts attention by its freshly green, large foliage. It looks especially well as an older, broad stand on the hardscape of larger tanks.
