Description
"Santarem Red" is an especially pretty Mayaca that comes from the area around Santarém in Brazil, judging by its trading name. It is not yet determined to species. This delicate, interestingly coloured stem plant probably came to the market in Japan first and spread among aquatic plant enthusiasts. In Europe it is not yet well known and rarely available. Mayaca sp. "Santarem Red" has light green, reddish to pink colours; the whiteish stem is densely set with leaves which have a red midrib and are often slightly wrinkled.
Until now, little is known about this novelty, however its requirements are surely comparable to those of the long known Mayaca fluviatilis: good lighting, CO2 and regular nutrient supply (especially iron), and rather soft water. As well as other stem plants, it is propagated by stem cuttings.
With its fine texture and light, reddish colouration, the Santarém bog moss looks best in the midground and should be especially interesting for combination with plants of unusual habit, e.g. Eriocaulon species. Because of its small size, Mayaca sp. "Santarem Red" is well suited for nano tanks.
