Echinodorus × pseudohorizontalis

This rather small, compact swordplant is labeled as Echinodorus horizontalis by aquarium plant nurseries but has nothing to do with the true E. horizontalis. It was described in 2004 by Karel Rataj under the name Echinodorus pseudohorizontalis. Later Samuli Lehtonen identified it as a hybrid by DNA analysis, therefore the spelling with ×. It resembles plants that are traded as Echinodorus 'Harbich'. When its delivered from nurseries, the emersed plant is often only about 6 to 9 cm high, however it may get considerably taller. It remains smaller and more compact as submerged plant, with about 10 to 15 cm wide, flat leaf rosettes. The up to 5 cm long leaf blades of the underwater form are round with heart-shaped base. Echinodorus × pseudohorizontalis grows rather slowly under aquarium conditions. We recommend a well-lit place and nutrient supply via the substrate. CO₂ addition is not necessary but enhances the growth of the plant. It grows more vigorous as emersed plant.
