Echinodorus major Ruffled sword plant

Echinodorus major Ruffled sword plant

Catalog Number
AP-0661
Description
This sword plant originates from shallow streams in Central Brazil where it mostly grows submerged. It is already known in the aquarium hobby since the 1950s and one of the most beautiful and suitable Echinodorus species. Unfortunately it has become quite rare in the trade in recent times. This magnificent rosette plant develops strap-shaped, light green, slightly transparent, wavy, to 60 cm long underwater leaves. Echinodorus major is easy to grow and has a high growth rate. Medium lighting is sufficient, the water may be soft to hard, acidic to slightly alkaline. Optimum temperatures are about 24-26℃. As well as other Echinodorus, this species benefits much from a nutrient-rich bottom and fertilization via the substrate, respectively. Well-growing specimens occasionally develop upright inflorescences with adventitious plantlets. This Echinodorus forms a large rosette with many long-lasting leaves. It looks best as a specimen plant or small group in large aquaria, in the midground to background. With its temperature tolerance to about 28℃ it is also interesting for Discus tanks.
