Description
Echinodorus 'Kleiner Bär', bred by Julius Hoechstetter, is available in the trade since 1995. This still popular red cultivar gets only about 25 cm tall and has a compact growth, which makes it suitable for the midground of larger tanks or as specimen plant in small tanks. The younger submerged leaves are rusty red to deeply dark red. In its emersed (terrestrial) form, it has more roundish, green leaves. Planted in the aquarium, it will develop its dark red submerged leaves after few days.
The Echinodorus variety 'Kleiner Baer' (translates as "little bear") was bred by Julius Hoechstetter (Trostberg). It is also sold in trade under the name Echinodorus Dschungelstar Nr.2 'Kleiner Baer'. Rarely available in the USA.
