Description
Cryptocoryne crispulata var. flaccidifolia is a water trumpet from rivers and streams in Southern Thailand. It features narrow, ribbon-like leaves. In the aquarium hobby it is known for a long time under the wrong name "Cryptocoryne retrospiralis" and is also available with the label Cryptocoryne crispatula (without variety name). Cryptocoryne crispatula var. flaccidifolia resembles Balansa's water trumpet (var. balansae), however it differs by considerably narrower, often wavy, but not hammered leaves.
As well as its close relative, Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae, the variety flaccidifolia is quite easy to cultivate and tolerates hard water. Nutrient-rich bottom, at least medium lighting and a good water current are beneficial. Also this crispatula variety forms dense stands by its runners. It tends to grow out of the bottom with upright, stem-like rhizomes. Such long shoots can be cut and set back into the ground. The remaining rhizome will regrow, mostly with several leaf rosettes.
This Cryptocoryne is interesting for the aquascaping as dense, grass-like population in the background, but is also a nice eye-catcher as a solitary bush in the midground. With its narrower leaves, it has a more grass-like habit than the var. balansae. It is also an appropriate plant for the creating Southeast Asia themed river biotope tanks.
